John Ulam founded Clad Metals Incorporated in 1967, bringing deep expertise in bonded metal technology developed through work in avionics, ballistics, and coinage for the U.S. Mint. The leap to cookware wasn't a business strategy. It was a personal experiment. Ulam applied his bonding knowledge to a pan for his own kitchen and immediately understood what he had: a cooking vessel where stainless steel's durability and non-reactive surface combined with aluminum's heat conductivity to produce something no single-metal pan could match. At the time, are now VP of Research and Technology — who joined the company in 1980 and has been part of its story for 46 years, and counting — recalls: "All-Clad started out in 1971 as an extension of Clad Metals Incorporated, and at that time Clad Metals was much larger than All-Clad. As the All-Clad products grew in reputation and volume, we became less and less of a metal supplier and more and more of a cookware manufacturer."
