The Art of Holiday Hosting: Essential Tips and Tricks for Memorable Celebrations

Holiday hosting is definitely an art. From menu planning to setting the table, we've put together our tips for keeping chaos out of the kitchen and turning holiday meals into lasting memories.

Essential Planning for Holiday Party Success

Two Weeks Before: Preparation Checklist

If it's your first time hosting your family or friends for a holiday dinner, creating a timeline that starts about two weeks before your event will help keep you organized.

In addition to allotting time for menu planning -- with modifications for any guests with special diets or food allergies -- your holiday party preparation list should include things like:

  • Defining Your Space and Dining Style: depending on your guest list and available space at home, you may need to move furniture, bring in additional seating, or split seating between multiple rooms. Depending on tabletop real estate and counter space, buffet-style may make more sense, however, family-style is also a great way to minimize foot traffic for smaller-space gatherings.
  • Taking Inventory of Table Items: a less-is-more table aesthetic makes easy work for setting a family-style table. If you're going for a buffet setup, you may have room on the table for simple centerpieces like candles, seasonal floral arrangements, or family photos.
  • Drafting a Grocery List: depending on the complexity of your dinner menu, the two-week mark is a good time to start your shopping list. If your menu includes specialty foods, including gluten-free items, you may want to confirm availability and secure inventory with your grocery store in advance. While many stores do plan ahead to accommodate hectic holiday shopping, certain less traditional items may not be part of their restock regimen.

Creating a Welcoming Holiday Atmosphere

Smart Solutions for Family-Style Service

Family-style can be a great option for smaller crowds or more casual holiday dinners. It's a good idea to time everything so that food stays warm without the need of chafing dishes or slow cookers .

Simplify your table setting while adding in a little nostalgia by using your stainless steel cookware for serving. Stainless steel cookware is a great hand-me-down heirloom gift. If you inherited your cookware from relatives, consider using those items for family recipes. The contrast between conventional platters and cookware will make for a unique and meaningful tablescape.

Buffet Setup Strategies

For holiday parties with larger groups of people, buffet-style serving is a great alternative. If space allows, setting up a buffet in an area with power outlets enables you to use things like electric skillets to keep food warm. You can still use cookware as serveware, including serving gravy straight from a sauce pan or butter warmer ; flared edges make for easy pouring while eliminating the need for more formal serving pieces like gravy boats.

We recommend labeling food when possible so guests know what they're eating, clearly denoting allergens. Add a little bit of nostalgia to the labels by sharing if it's being served in an heirloom piece of cookware, or if it's a cherished family recipe.

Building a Beverage Station

Whether you opt for plated, family-style, or buffet for serving food, it's also important to have a plan for drinks.

Creating a beverage station is the buffet-equivalent for drinks. It's low-effort and can be a great way to add in some festive variety. For coffee or tea drinkers, a beverage station setup is great because you can have an electric kettle plugged in and ready to pour, while also serving things like signature holiday cocktails, sodas, and more.

To really maximize your space, you can have your beverage station work double-duty as a spot for serving appetizers and hors d'oeuvres. Our mini measuring bowls are great for serving accoutrements like citrus tweels, lemon or lime wedges, or even Luxardo cherries. They also work well for dips, nut mixes, and olives. You can also easily convert a cutting board into a chic charcuterie board with minimal effort.

Holiday Hosting Gifts

Attending a holiday party can sometimes involve as much choreography as hosting one. Make choosing the perfect gift for a holiday party host doesn't have to be a hassle. We recommend avoiding last-minute grab-and-go options and instead, consider pairing one of our cookware items with a handwritten recipe card for something meaningful and useful.
